eManaging Student Resources

Client
A subsidiary of a New Zealand university promoting distance education to more than 36000 adult learners selected NuNet as its technology and development partner to build a web-based student resource management system that manages everything from tracking student performance to distribution of study kits, enabling complete transparency in fund utilisation and administration. The educational program has started a new learning phenomenon never before seen in the New Zealand tertiary education sector and it is available free of charge nationally.

Complexities
Building the applications around a government accredited database without disturbing the database; ensuring the client server features in a web environment; ensuring the business rules that are New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) compliant; provision of a critical supply chain solution with enterprise wide integration are some of the complexities of this system.

NuNet developed an automated warehouse distribution and returns management system in Microsoft ASP technologies that will reside and operate on an SQL Server database. The technology implementation involves integration with the NZQA compliant student registration system and other legacy applications used by the client with multiple levels of security to restrict access to users within the organization.

Solution Provided

An automated warehouse distribution system ensures automated distribution of student study kits with extensive integration with a hierarchical barcode management system based on geographical region with ability to print/reprint barcodes that have been damaged.

The system maintains a comprehensive database on student kits and integrates with inventory management systems to manage/monitor/ maintain information on all stock movements and minimum reorder levels.

The application has a return management system that has an interface with the warehouse distribution system to manage undelivered student study kits and their accounting as per the stock holdings with the help of bar code technology.

Provides a CRM type knowledge system to manage the tracking activities of staff in locating students of returned kits and their redistribution and allocation back to located students via the automated warehouse distribution system.

An easy reporting mechanism has been provided to enable the user to interrogate the database and produce reports in an ad hoc fashion.

The success of this project has prompted the client to license this application to one of the largest polytechnics of New Zealand. For the project customization, NuNet has been re-employed by both organizations.
