A world leader in diagnostic test instruments and supplying specialized testing equipment and engineering services to the electric power industry since 1920, has outsourced to NuNet the product development of its F-Series of 'Power System Simulators'. These products provide new levels of analytical capability for testing and calibrating any protective relays and generate sine waves of voltage and current whose values are digitally controlled.

NuNet's product development in relay testing equipment helps the users to combine the portability of universal relay test sets with the transient testing capabilities of modern power system simulators at a price comparable to the price of conventional test sets. The automated relay testing software enhances the productivity by automatically recording, plotting and storing the data, thus eliminating the operator errors.

Complexities
Building as a powerful tool with complex database design, mathematical intensive characteristic equations parsing with generation of the graphs, using the characteristic and multi-equations for curve smoothing and zone constructions for impedance functions are some of the complexities of the project.

The project incorporated advanced Microsoft technologies with Crystal Reports, Far Point and National Instruments Graph Controls. It combines automatic control of test instruments with the functions of a client server database. Designed to meet the needs for improved productivity and quality in preventive maintenance, the end product built was both a relay test tool and a database to document relay settings, test methods, and test history.

Solution Provided


Extensive window-driven interface is provided to translate relay electrical characteristics into the appropriate test plan.

A comprehensive selection of parametric tests with programmable conditions has been incorporated to make test plan definition a matter of selecting the desired one from a menu.

Incorporation of Calc engine performs various complex calculations and displays results with accurate precision. Auto run calibrated system incorporated automatically runs multiple test modules without user intervention.

Real-time display of test results in tabular form and graphical form while automatic testing is in progress. Customizable relay characteristics can be viewed in different scales and dynamic construction of characteristic curves is feasible.

Live simulation communication and test automation can be achieved using macros or algorithms that control the voltage/ current / frequency / impedance sources and the logic outputs of any test instrument.

Availability of generic relay test library that contains typical relays, test plans and test for creating new relays. Creating templates for relays and test plans in the library is the same as creating a new relay and its test plans.

The product presents all the tests required to test distance relays including the maximum torque angle of Mho characteristics, reach test, times, test in each zone, etc.

Capability of the product enables the test to be flexible to adapt to test any relay from any relay manufacturer.
